Lake Jindabyne is an easy two hour drive south from Canberra, through Cooma, on the Monaro Highway and is the doorway to the NSW snowfields and the Kosciusko National Park.

In winter Jindabyne is a base for skiers bound for the major resorts in Kosciuszko National Park and for the rest of the year it's a great place from which to go bushwalking, mountain biking, white-water rafting, canoeing, horse riding and kayaking. The lake provides superb opportunities for trout fishing and water sports. The lake is the catchment area from the Snowy, Thredbo and Eucumbene rivers, though the only volume of water comes from the Thredbo arm, which provides the breeding grounds for the lake's wild trout population.

Gaden Hatchery is one of Australia's main centres for the breeding and rearing of cold water sport fish. Four species are produced at Gaden; Atlantic salmon, Brook trout, Brown trout and Rainbow trout.
